Local Government Environmental Noise Course

NVMS’s 2-day Local Government Environmental Noise (LGEN) Course is aimed specifically at local government Environmental Health Officers who wish to increase their knowledge of environmental noise principles, practice and legislation.

The course is recognized by the WA Department of Environment and Conservation, and complements their own 2-day Noise Refresher course, although any EHOs are welcome to attend the LGEN course whether or not they are due for a DEC Noise Refresher. The course covers all aspects of environmental noise from a physical and practical perspective, while the DEC course covers the legislative aspects in more detail.

Following the 2-day course, there is also an optional half-day workshop where detailed use of the popular Brüel & Kjær 2250 Sound Analyser is covered, along with the NVMS “Yellow Brick” complaint recorder.

LGEN Course Subjects include:

  • Basic Acoustics
  • Acoustic Analysis
  • Instrumentation
  • WA Env Noise Regulations in Brief
  • Assessment of Intrusive Characteristics
  • Outdoor Sound Propagation
  • Weather Effects on Measurements
  • Applying the Regulations in Practice
  • Calculating Influencing Factors
  • Noise Prediction and Modelling

Course Structure

The course is divided into presentations, using Powerpoint, audio demonstrations, worked examples and Q&A sessions.
Attendees receive a complete set of Powerpoint slide handouts as well as additional relevant material. Participants are encouraged to bring their own sound level meters (although not essential for the 2-day course), and those who attend the optional ½ day workshop have ample opportunity to use the Brüel & Kjær 2250 Sound Analyser in practice.

Who Should Attend

Environmental Health Officers at all levels, who wish to further their knowledge of practical acoustics and all aspects of noise in the environment. There are no pre-requisites as we assume zero acoustics knowledge. Those EHOs who do have some prior experience will therefore find the first few sessions useful revision.

Training Facility

The LGEN course is held at our Perth training facility: 437 Vincent Street West, West Leederville WA 6007 (see map).
